Part 1
“So would you go out with me?” he let out with a long breath. A breath that no doubt he had been harboring in his chest the whole time he had confessed to the crush of his whole college career. Which was about a year so far. Minho was a young freshmen, he was handsome, and he had just confessed to a junior.
It was his first time ever confessing to someone. All the days of his high school years he had gotten numerous teenagers to prance up to him, stumble up to him, and even run up to him and shove a letter in his face and then run away. All confessing their desire to go out with the captain of the soccer team, the track team, and the school's number one running back for the football team. He was the secretary all four years in high school, and his grades never sucked. Always B's and the few easy A's. He had been quite popular during his high school glory years. And being both popular and handsome of course brought along numerous relationships. His freshmen year the junior captain of the varsity cheerleading squad asked him to the homecoming dance. He happily obliged and was the best date he possibly could be. Matching outfits and everything. His popularity continued, and Minho didn't mind in the least. He was teenage boy, and these girls and boys were throwing themselves to him left and right. How could he say no? It wasn't like he ever lied or anything. When he wanted something serious, he told them so. When he was just looking for something fun, he assured them that after their canoodling in his back seat, nothing else was happening. He was a play boy with good manners. And it worked for him.
When he reached college, his popularity seemed to follow him. It took less then a couple of hours at freshmen orientation for a senior to ask him out to coffee. She was cute, she was paying, and she only wanted fun. His type of girl.
A few days later a junior boy in his English class asked him over for a study date. He had food, he was cute, he only wanted fun, and he bottomed. Minho's type of guy. He was realizing how un-serious these college student were about fooling around. After his first five dates, he decided he was going to like college very much.
And then he had laid eyes on him.
It wasn't exactly a likeness at first glance. It was more a curiosity. And he wondered why he hadn't noticed such a peculiar boy before. Minho was known for being tall dark and handsome. His eyes gave people chills, his lips were full and kissable, his skin was tad more tan than most and extremely soft and smooth. Not to mention his silk black locks and his tone body.
But this boy...
He was shorter than Minho by the looks of it, his skin far more paler...he had this look on his face. Like he was staring off in to a very interesting world. His hair was a soft black that was borderline brown, and his bangs fell in to his face in a very lazy and untidy way. They were so much so in his face that Minho couldn't make out the boy's eyes. But that really wasn't what made him curious. It was in fact, where the boy was sitting. The classroom was rather large. A theater arts elective class that took place in the school's performing arts hall. There were hundreds of rows with thousands of seats. The hall was suppose to fit a maximum of twenty thousand people. And while the class gathered at the center block of seats in the first ten or so rows to hear the teacher, that boy...that peculiar boy.
He sat all the way in the fucking back of the place. Minho literally had to squint a bit to get a good look at him. But there he was, in the far corner right next to a exit sign. The signed casted a red glow over the boy who was staring off in to space, a notebook in hand and the eraser of his pencil pushed in to his right cheek while he pondered on whatever it was a boy sitting in the back of a performing hall could ponder on. But it was where he sat that had caught Minho's attention.
Even the so called loners of the class only sat two rows behind the entire class body, or over in the next mass of seats to keep away from the other normalized students.
But there he was, in the very back. Minho checked ever now and again during a few weeks to see if maybe the boy was in fact an extreme loner of some sort. But no. He didn't seem lonely in the least. He seemed completely content with his spot away from the others. He didn't look angry or depressed at the world. He just...
“sits in the back.” Minho had muttered to himself one day. And a fellow classmate looked up in surprise at Minho's sudden words.
“What'd you say?” he asked with wide and curious eyes. Minho looked back with the same look.
“Hm?” his mind was still stuck on the boy in the back.
“You said something.” the boy chuckled as an amused smile lit up his face.
“Oh..uh yeah I was just thinking aloud.” Minho shrugged. The boy pierced his lips and nodded his head in understanding. The boy was cute Minho noticed, and his little 'possible-hook-up' radar beeped with interest as the boy nonchalantly flipped his hair out of his eyes. It was deep brown and rich, it matched his wide puppy eyes as they peaked at Minho who was openly staring.
“I'm Minho.” the freshmen did his best to make his voice low enough to be sexy and not creepy. It seemed to work as the brunette bit his bottom lip and responded.
“Jonghyun.” he said with a cocked eyebrow. Minho challenged him with a smoldering gaze.
“Why haven't I noticed you before Jonghyun?” he asked with an underlying meaning. Jonghyun snickered a bit before shrugging and pretending to listen to whatever the professor was saying.
“So...single?” Minho had learned to be very blunt in college. They didn't beat around the bush, people wanted to know if you were available for fun times. And if you weren't, could they still get your number just in case the future opened up for you.
“Nope.” Jonghyun's lips popped with emphasis as his eyebrows hit the top of his forehead and he scribbled some notes in to his notebook. Minho clicked his tongue in disbelief. A boy as good looking as him could not be going steady.
“I'm in a damn good relationship, so don't try anything. My boyfriend will tear your very handsome eyes out. And plus,” Jonghyun paused his previous scribbling in his notebook to give Minho a sly smile of knowing, “I top in the bedroom.” he smirked.
“Aaaah.” Minho chuckled to himself. He felt a bit foolish, but just because he was taken didn't mean flirting was off limits.
“Don't worry, if I were single, I would have let you take me out.” Jonghyun mused as he squinted at their professor's slide show. Today's lesson was on where the vocals come from. How to make vowels more powerful if you knew where they came from in your body. No interest to Minho.
“Oh really? Where would let me take you?” Minho continued. The interest for a date was long gone by now, but Jonghyun seemed to be willing to play along. Minho liked that.
“I like watching movies, preferably horror movies. I think they're hilarious.” the boy muttered and continued to scribble away.
“What? How are horror movies funny? Aren't they suppose to be—“
“Scary? Yeah. It would help if there were actually realistic situations and not so much corn syrup everywhere.” Jonghyun rolled his eyes.
“Oh come on! I find some to be overly terrifying.” Minho scoffed.
“Really? Like what?” Jonghyun challenged. Minho liked a challenge.
“Darkness Falls.” Minho presented a movie that had him running to his mother's room late at night when he was young.
“The tooth fairy isn't even real! Do you know how hard I laughed at the whole 'Stay in the light' crap?” Jonghyun made a mock terror face causing Minho to smile.
“The grudge.” he tried.
“I don't know why no one just slaps the bitch in the face.”
“Chucky.”
“He's a doll. Enough said.”
“Well then what do you consider scary?” Minho huffed with a smile. Jonghyun bit the end of his pen for a moment's thought before turning to Minho with a strong gaze.
“The sixth sense.” he bellowed quietly. Minho actually had to cover his mouth to stop from laughing aloud.
“How is a little boy who isn't even evil of any sort scarier than a demonic possessed doll?” Minho challenged. Just as he finished his sentence, their professor dismissed them from class. And Minho and Jonghyun got up from their seats to gather their books and jackets.
“To answer your question, it is scary because that actually happens.” Jonghyun stated, “There are people in this world that actually do see dead people. And it gives you a small look in to their world. Can you imagine how terrifying it would be to see dead people all the time? Sad ones, angry ones, mutilated ones? Just walking in and out of your room and closets and all the freaking time? I'd be freaked out!” Jonghyun threw his arms in the air for a dramatic effect. Okay he had a point. But Minho did not like to lose. So he tried one last time.
“Paranormal activity.” he challenged for the final time. He was pleased to see Jonghyun pause for a moment of consideration. But then he was brought back down from his high.
“Never seen it.” the boy shrugged with out a care to Minho's frustration.
“Well I will need you to see it sometime so you, the horror expert, can give me the final opinion on whether I pissed my pants in vain or not.” Minho chided as Jonghyun threw his head back in laughter.
“You know you shouldn't be peeing in your pants at this age. That is so immature.” Jonghyun snickered. The boy was funny, he was kind, he could hold good conversations.
“Well when you decide to go see it, let me know. Maybe we can double date.” Minho suggested. Jonghyun nodded and said that sound cool, he didn't see why. The two began to walk up past the other hundreds of rows to exit the performing hall. On the way though, Minho noticed Jonghyun frowning as his gaze raked the seats of the hall.
“Looking for someone?” Minho asked.
“Yeah...my boyfriend's cousin. I told him to wait for me, but I guess he had somewhere to go.” Jonghyun shrugged it off. The two dots clicked together immediately.
“The boy in the back.” Minho stated rather than asked.
“Yeah, you saw him?” Jonghyun asked as they finally reached the exit.
“During class I did.” Minho mentioned honestly.
“He's not weird or anything. He just doesn't like to get to close to people, especially big crowds. A bit claustrophobic if you ask me.” Jonghyun's eyes were still wandering the around the hall the pair was now walking down. Minho nodded in understanding, not thinking too much of it.
“Jong!” a voice called out ahead of them, and Minho looked up. There was the boy who sat in the back, walking toward them. Minho noted that he was right about his hair being on the borderline of black and brown. Maybe it depended on the light he stood under...
“Hyung! Where'd you go?” Jonghyun slapped a hand on to the boy's shoulder in familiarity.
“I thought you got out ahead of me, my bad.” the boy said and eyed Minho suddenly and Jonghyun noticed.
“Ah Hyung, this is Minho. He's in our class.” Jonghyun introduced the two.
And then the boy smiled.
His smile was...out of nowhere. His face was so plain and simple a second ago, that Minho didn't even think to look forward to such a smile. It almost hit his ears on both ends, and his teeth were perfectly straight and a brilliant white. His full lips spread out in to smooth pink lines, and his eyes scrunched up to be thin dark lines.
It was the smile his mother had before she died.
This boy had his mother's smile.
A smile that screamed he was happy and the world was suddenly a really good place.
It was the most beautiful smile in the whole world.
After that it took almost no time for Minho to fall head over heels for the boy. He learned his name from Jonghyun, his real name was Lee Jinki. But his friends called him Onew. He was a junior, far more older than Minho. He was a very simple and nice guy on the surface it seemed, but Minho just knew that there was so much more to be discovered underneath.
Onew never got too close to people. He apparently sat in the very back of all of his classes, he didn't go to any parties, he spent most of his time in the library, he liked to watch historian dramas. This was all of course information Minho had so cunningly taken from Jonghyun. The two had gotten along quite nicely, and it didn't take much probing for Jonghyun to start rambling about something.
Minho had met Jonghyun's boyfriend Kibum, and he saw that the great smile seemed to run in the family. But it still just wasn't as brilliant as Onew's.
Minho kind of started stalking the boy. He kind of accidentally hung out with Jonghyun all week just so he could memorize Onew's schedule.
He had all the facts in his head, and they seemed simple enough.
Kibum and Jonghyun were together, Onew was Kibum's cousin and Jonghyun's best friend. Kibum didn't actually attend their school, he went to the design college a few blocks away. Because of Onew's people phobia, Jonghyun had to take extra care of Onew and make sure the older man had someone he could depend on with him for most of the time. They were even roomates.
So the closer Minho attached himself to Jonghyun, the more he got to see Onew.
He also noticed something about Onew.
Onew rarely smiled. The one time that Jonghyun had introduced the two boys was one of the only times Minho would ever get to see that blinding grin. It was rare. Onew just didn't smile that much. Maybe it was because he didn't see a reason to, but still. It was like he was locking it away on purpose, and once in awhile he would literally gift you with it and make your heart thud and pause for a moment. Just until the smile disappeared as fast as it showed up.
Minho loved that smile. He was in love with that smile and he didn't know how to turn back.
He wanted to not only love that smile, he urgently wanted to know more about the soul attached to that smile so he could love the soul as well.
He had watched and studied Onew for about three weeks. And he decided to make his move. So while he 'accidentally' found Onew in the library, he sat down in front of the older boy. He pulled together all the courage he could, and took note that this was what it must have felt like for all those other people who had asked him out...
He took a deep breath and told Onew exactly the moment he had wanted to date him, how he really wanted to get to know the older boy more, and finally he asked,
“So would you go out with me?” and he watched as Onew peeked up from the very large book he was reading. His eyes were a dark black. Minho liked that.
His heard felt like it was spitting out fire as Onew licked his bottom lip to take a deep breath.
“No thank you.”
Onew looked Minho straight in the eyes as he answered. Minho's heart gave a loud thud and the fire was immediately extinguished.
“W-what?” Minho checked. He couldn't be hearing the older man right.
“I said no thank you. I don't want to go out with you.” Onew's voice was soft but solid. He didn't want to go out with Minho.
He felt his ego bubble up a bit. Why wouldn't Onew want to go out with him? Minho was kind, he was handsome. He was good looking and he had heard several times that he was even good in bed. How could this loner boy turn him down?
“Why not?” Minho asked. For once he felt like a lost puppy. He didn't know what to do, what to say next to convince Onew that he should in fact go out on a date with him.
“How many people have you dated Minho? How many people have you slept with?” Onew asked quietly, but his eyes were no longer looking at the younger boy. They were skimming over the open page of his very large book. It was like he didn't even want to hear Minho's response.
“What does that matter? I want to go out with you. I want to go steady with you. Why does it—“
“Because it matters to me. You are a player. It is what you are and you can't deny it. I don't have time for fun. I don't have time to fool around. I am not that type. I know what lifestyle you live. I know you have gone out with Jonghyun to numerous parties and have had sex with multiple partners and that is not the kind of person I want to date. I'm not looking to 'go steady' with anyone. I am looking for my life partner who isn't a disgusting play boy like you.” Onew finished his little speech and turned the page of his book with a gentle manner. Unlike the words he had just spat at Minho. He hadn't made eye contact with Minho the whole time he had talked to him. Like Minho wasn't even important enough.
Ouch.
Minho hadn't even known Onew was capable of those words. And he felt his stomach drop and his heart race as he took in all the words that had been pointed at him with cruelty and honestly also.
“I come her to study. So if you could please leave me alone. Thank you.” Onew muttered that last part as he wrote down notes on a open notebook. He was done with the conversation, and had dismissed Minho with out a happy goodbye or a sorry or anything.
It was the first time Minho had ever confessed.
It was the first time he had ever been turned down.
And he didn't know it yet, but it was only the first of many times he would as Onew out.
